چکیده

Abstract. Uncrewed Systems (UxS), including uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and tethered balloon/kite (TBS), are significantly expanding observational capabilities in atmospheric science. Rapid adaptation of these platforms the advancement miniaturized instruments have resulted an number datasets captured under various environmental conditions by Department Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility. In 2021, data collected using ARM UxS platforms, seven TigerShark UAS flights 133 balloon system (TBS) flights, were archived Data Center (https://adc.arm.gov/discovery/#/, last access: 11 February 2022) made publicly available at no cost for all registered users (https://doi.org/10.5439/1846798) (Mei Dexheimer, 2022). These streams provide new perspectives on spatial variability surface parameters, helping to address critical science questions Earth research. This paper describes DOE UAS/TBS datasets, information acquisition, collection, quality control processes, highlights potential scientific contributions TBS platforms.

Evaluation of a 5-Year Cloud and Radiative Property Dataset Derived from GOES-8 Data over the Southern Great Plains

Satellite cloud analyses can provide a long-term record of microphysical, macrophysical and radiative properties over a large area. However, to have confidence in these retrievals, the results must be compared with ground truth or reliable reference sources. The layered bispectral threshold method (LBTM; Minnis et al. 1995) has been used to derive cloud and radiative properties from the eighth ...

A 3-Year Climatology of Cloud and Radiative Properties Derived from GOES-8 Data Over the Southern Great Plains

While the various instruments maintained at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Southern Great Plains (SGP) Central Facility (CF) provide detailed cloud and radiation measurements for a small area, satellite cloud property retrievals provide a means of examining the large-scale properties of the surrounding region over an extended period of time. Seasonal and inter-annual climat...

Temporal Variations of Land Surface Microwave Emissivities over the ARM Southern Great Plains Site

Land surface microwave emissivities are important geophysical parameters for atmospheric, hydrological, and biospheric studies. This study estimates land surface microwave emissivity using an atmospheric microwave radiative transfer model and a combination of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) satellite observations and data from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Sout...

The WRF nested within the CESM: Simulations of a midlatitude cyclone over the Southern Great Plains

[1] This paper describes an integrated modeling system in which the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is nested within the Community Earth System Model (CESM). This system is validated for the simulation of a midlatitude cyclongesis event over the Southern Great Plains of the United States. The global atmospheric model CAM4 at T42 resolution in the CESM has missed this cyclogenesis, ...

Observationally based evaluation of NWP reanalyses in modeling cloud properties over the Southern Great Plains

[1] This study evaluates three major Numerical-Weather-Prediction reanalyses (ERA-Interim, NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis I, and NCEP/DOE Reanalysis II) in modeling surface relative shortwave cloud forcing, cloud fraction, and cloud albedo. The observations used for this evaluation are decade-long surface-based continuous measurements of the U.S. Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program from 03/25...
